Jemez Mountain Trail

Traveling this trail provides a journey through time. A leisurely day trip along this National Scenic Byway takes you past fantastic geologic formations, ancient Indian ruins, and reminders of the area’s logging, mining and ranching heritage. Many opportunities exist for hiking, fishing, camping, and cross-country skiing. The Jemez Mountains also boast one of the most famous natural hot springs in the world.

San Ysidro
Gateway to the Jemez Mountain Trail, where Hwy 4 and US 550 meet, it features a restored Spanish adobe church and the works of local artisans.

Pueblo of Jemez
The village of Walatowa offers a visitor center, museum and gift shop featuring Jemez arts and crafts. Studio tours, bread baking demonstrations, and examples of traditional social dances are available with advance notice.

Jemez Springs
Sample delicious cuisine and wander through local galleries. Or, treat yourself to a soak in the natural hot springs and massage at the historic Jemez Springs Bathhouse at the Jemez State Monument or make yourself at home in one of several bed and breakfasts.

Jemez Falls
At the Jemez Falls Campground, an easy .5-mile loop hike leads to Jemez Falls, a 70-goot plunge through a narrow gap in the granite bedrock.

Gilman Tunnels
Take NM 486 turnoff from Hwy 4 for a spetacular 5-mile drive that winds past tiny farmsteads along the Guadalupe River. View stunning, near-vertical cliffs of red rock and car-sized boulders throgh the serpntine canyon.

Soda Dam
Be sure to grab lunchg along Hwy 4 at one of the local cafes or restaurants, or delve into a burger at a classic roadside diner.

A sheer cliff rising suddenly up resembling the bow of a ship.
